Supporting Organisations Through Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus

At CybaVerse, our team plays a fundamental role in delivering our cyber security platform, CybaOps, alongside a range of cyber security services to our customers and partners.

In this article, we explore Emma Mouncey’s role as a Cyber Security Analyst and how she works closely with organisations to support them in successfully completing their Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus assessments.

Emma’s Role as a Cyber Security Analyst

Within her role, Emma collaborates directly with customers to identify gaps in their existing cyber security practices and provides guidance on strengthening their vulnerability management approach. Her work helps organisations understand where improvements are needed and how they can align their security posture with certification requirements.

Emma also contributes internally by supporting CybaVerse’s ISO 27001 compliance efforts, helping to implement strong, cyber-focused policies that support the organisation’s commitment to maintaining high cyber security standards.

Bringing Clarity to Complex Compliance Requirements

“My strengths are structured thinking, attention to detail and communication.

I work with all out customers to ensure they understand the Cyber Essentials certification for more than just a qualification, but also an aid in hardening their security and tightening their defences against malicious actors.

Internally, I bring clarity to complex compliance requirements and prioritise based on real risk rather than noise. This adds value by reducing our internal audit exposure and improving certification outcomes.” – Says Emma.

Because Emma works so closely with customers and stakeholders, her attention to detail is critical.

When breaking down complex requirements, she ensures organisations clearly understand what is needed and how to move forward with their Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus assessments.

Ensuring Accurate Guidance for Customers

If a question arises that requires further investigation, Emma ensures transparency with the customer, explaining that she will review the query internally before providing a confirmed answer.

She works closely with colleagues across the compliance, SOC, and penetration testing teams to ensure that any guidance provided is accurate and aligned with the certification standards. This collaborative approach ensures organisations receive reliable advice and remain aligned with the requirements of the framework.

Working Effectively Under Pressure

During her two and half years at CybaVerse, Emma has experienced several high-pressure situations while supporting customers and assessments. She explains:

“I handle being under pressure well by breaking down tasks into smaller more achievable goals. I also work with my peers to strategies a plan of action. Having a clear plan allows for me to react appropriately and ensure the job gets done.”

Moving Beyond a “Tick Box” Approach to Compliance

Compliance is often misunderstood, with many assuming the role is simply about ticking boxes rather than genuinely understanding and managing risk.

At times, Emma needs to have honest conversations with organisations to help them understand that they cannot be misleading when answering assessment questions, even if the pressure to pass makes it tempting.

With her knowledge and experience in Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, Emma is able to clearly explain why certain security measures are important not just for achieving certification, but for protecting the organisation and its data.

Providing inaccurate responses may lead to certification being achieved on paper, but it can leave critical vulnerabilities unaddressed. Emma’s role helps ensure organisations approach these assessments with integrity, strengthening their security posture rather than simply aiming to tick the box.

We asked Emma what good security really means to her and she said ‘Good security to me means ensuring all the basics are in place.

But it also means having a positive Cyber Security culture, where there is a focus on continuous improvement and open discussion.

Cyber security is no longer if an attack will happen, but when.

So good security ensures you are in the best position to defend against, react to or recover from it.’

Strengthening Security Beyond Certification

Emma’s work highlights an important truth about cyber security and compliance.

Achieving certification should never be the end goal. Instead, it should be part of a wider commitment to building stronger, more resilient security practices.

Through her collaboration with customers and her work within CybaVerse, Emma helps organisations move beyond simply passing an assessment. By focusing on clarity, honesty, and practical improvements, she ensures that Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus become meaningful steps towards better protection rather than just a box to tick.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, the value of knowledgeable professionals who can translate complex requirements into clear, actionable guidance becomes increasingly important. Emma’s role reflects the approach CybaVerse takes with every customer: combining expertise, transparency, and practical support to help organisations strengthen their defences and stay prepared for what comes next.
