Linux KSMBD RCE Flaws. Disable. Restrict. Watch.

Two remote code execution flaws in KSMBD, the in-kernel Linux SMB server, have no CVEs or fixes yet. Clear steps for businesses, internal IT teams and MSPs running NAS devices and appliances.

Disclosed

Two KSMBD flaws reported by security researchers, CVSS 9.0 each.

No CVEs or fixes. Not reported exploited, not on CISA KEV.

Now

Find KSMBD, disable it where not needed and keep port 445 off the internet.

What to Do in the Next 24 Hours

Proactive on the left. Reactive on the right. Tick both tracks.

Proactive: Find and Disable KSMBD

KSMBD is not Samba. It is mostly found on NAS and appliance builds. Samba-only systems are not affected by these flaws.

Free Checker Scripts

Built by the CybaVerse threat hunt team. Run it on Linux servers and appliances where you have a shell to see whether KSMBD is running and reachable.

Read-only by design

The checker only reads module, process and listening port state. It never sends SMB traffic or changes the host. Stopping and blacklisting KSMBD stay with you. Review any script before you run it.

Verdicts

  • PATCHEDKSMBD not present or mitigated: module not loaded, mountd not running, or blacklisted. This is not a fixed kernel, because no patch exists yet.
  • LIKELY VULNERABLEKSMBD loaded or running and TCP 445 listening. Stop and blacklist it, or restrict 445 now.
  • UNKNOWNPartial visibility, for example the 445 listener owner is unclear.
  • ERRORThe check failed, so the result is unknown.

Exit codes

CodeMeaning
0PATCHED (not present or mitigated)
1LIKELY VULNERABLE
2UNKNOWN
3ERROR

MSPs and internal IT teams can use the exit code in RMM or deployment tooling to flag hosts at scale.

Know the limits

  • PATCHED means KSMBD is not present or is mitigated. No kernel patch or CVE exists yet.
  • Closed NAS and appliance builds may not give you a shell. Ask the vendor whether the SMB service uses KSMBD.
  • The KQL has not been run on a live tenant and the checker was tested against fixtures only.

Reactive: How to Hunt
