Microsoft Defender and M365 Security

We already run Microsoft Defender. Is MDR the right next step?

For most organisations already running Microsoft Defender, MDR is the right next step because Defender raises incidents but does not staff a team to act on them at 3am. MDR adds 24/7 analysts, correlation across endpoint, identity and cloud, and agreed containment. You keep Defender.

What does Defender do, and what does it leave to you?

Microsoft Defender detects threats on endpoints and across Microsoft 365, blocks known malware and raises incidents. What it does not do by itself is decide whether an incident is real, investigate it in context, contact the right person or contain it at night. Those tasks fall to your IT team or MSP, and that is where the gap usually sits.

A common question in our sales conversations is simply "why can't we just use what we already pay Microsoft for?" The honest answer is that you should keep using it. The question is who is responsible for responding to it.

How do you decide whether you need MDR on top of Defender?

Work through the questions below. If you answer "no" or "not sure" to three or more, MDR is likely worth evaluating. The steps take an afternoon and give you a clear decision based on your own coverage, not a vendor's pitch.

  1. Step 1: Check who reviews Defender incidents out of hours

If no one looks at incidents between 6pm and 8am or at weekends, attacks that start then have hours to spread.

  2. Step 2: Check how fast you can contain a device or account

Could your team isolate a laptop in Defender or disable a compromised account within minutes, at any time? If not, you need agreed, pre-approved containment.

  3. Step 3: Check whether identity and email signals are joined up

Many attacks begin with a stolen Microsoft 365 session, not malware. Make sure sign-in and mailbox activity are watched alongside endpoints.

  4. Step 4: Check your licence and configuration

Confirm which Defender plan each client has and whether Defender is in active blocking or passive mode. Several MSPs we speak to find Defender in passive mode alongside another antivirus.

  5. Step 5: Count the incidents nobody closes

Look at last month's Defender incidents. How many were investigated, resolved and documented?

  6. Step 6: Compare options on response, not detection

Compare Microsoft's own managed services, channel MDR providers and an in-house approach on who acts and which tools they cover.

How do the options compare?

There are three realistic routes for a Defender estate. The table compares them on who does the work. Check vendor terms directly, because packaging and minimums change often and some services only advise on third-party tools. Use it as a starting point for your own shortlist.

When is Defender alone, or Microsoft Defender Experts, the better fit?

Defender alone can be enough when an organisation already has staff who review and act on Defender incidents around the clock. Microsoft Defender Experts for XDR, Microsoft's own managed service for Defender workloads, can suit Microsoft-only estates that want Microsoft analysts and do not need an MSP-delivered, white-label service.

  • Defender alone fits if you have an in-house team covering nights and weekends and a tested incident process. Microsoft Learn describes how Defender XDR groups alerts into incidents, which still need someone to work them.
  • Defender Experts fits if your estate is Microsoft-only and you are happy for Microsoft to be the managed service provider. Check current eligibility and scope on Microsoft Learn.
  • MSP-delivered MDR such as CybaOps fits if you are an MSP, or buy through one, and need the other EDR tools you already use, such as Sophos, covered in the same service.

Where do CybaOps and Defender work together?

CybaOps adds a UK SOC and one platform on top of a client's existing Microsoft security stack. You do not have to replace Defender to get 24/7 monitoring and response, because CybaOps connects to the Microsoft logs you already have and our analysts watch them around the clock.

  • CybaOps connects to Microsoft Defender, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID logs.
  • If you already pay for Microsoft security, CybaOps and our SOC help you get far more out of it.
  • Our UK-based security operations centre monitors customer environments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • CybaOps works with the security tools you already have, including Microsoft Defender, Sophos and the other EDR tools you already use, so you do not have to rip and replace.
  • CybaCore is our AI-enabled MDR package, with 24/7 UK cyber operators, continuous monitoring, identity threat detection and response, and a monthly allowance of incident response.
  • We are adding Microsoft 365 configuration checks to CybaOps vulnerability management.

What else do teams ask about Defender and MDR?

These are the follow-up questions we hear most from MSPs and IT managers comparing Defender alone with Defender plus MDR. Short answers below; each links into deeper Knowledge Hub pages where relevant.

Do we need to replace Defender to use CybaOps?

No. CybaOps connects to Microsoft Defender, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID logs and works alongside Defender.

Do we need Microsoft Sentinel?

Not to get started. Ask any MDR provider which Microsoft data sources it needs for your clients.

Does the Defender connector change our Defender settings?

Ask any provider exactly what permissions its connector needs and whether it changes settings.

Is Defender for Business enough for MDR?

It depends on the telemetry and response features in the plan. Microsoft Learn describes Defender for Business as built for organisations up to 300 users; check which Defender data the MDR service needs before deciding.

Is MDR the same as Microsoft Defender Experts?

Both are managed services. Compare who acts on non-Microsoft tools, eligibility and whether the service is available through your MSP. See Microsoft Learn for current Defender Experts scope.

What should you do next?

See the Microsoft integrations on the CybaOps Platform page. MSPs managing many Microsoft tenants can read about the CybaVerse partner model.
