MDR Comparisons and Switching

How do you switch MDR providers mid-contract without a coverage gap?

Switch MDR providers by overlapping them, not swapping them. Run a scoped proof of concept with the new provider, onboard client by client while the old service stays live, and cut over only when the new SOC is handling real incidents. Export your history first.

Why do MSPs switch MDR providers?

The reasons we hear most are alerts without remediation, noisy or overly technical escalations, slow onboarding, weak ticketing integration, and risk that has not measurably dropped despite years of service. Whatever the reason, the switch itself must not create a window where nobody is watching.

What does a safe switch look like?

A safe switch moves through five phases. The table summarises what each phase delivers. Your timeline will depend on contract terms, the number of clients and how many connectors each client needs. Plan each phase with named owners on both sides.

How do you switch MDR providers, step by step?

Use these steps whether you are an MSP moving a whole client book or a mid-market IT team moving a single organisation. Do not give notice to the old provider until Step 4 is complete. Keep a written log of each step per client.

  1. Step 1: Check the old contract

Find the notice period, renewal date and what happens to your data and incident history at exit.

  2. Step 2: Inventory every client and tool

List each client's EDR, Microsoft tenant, firewalls, ticketing and escalation contacts.

  3. Step 3: Write PoC success criteria

For example: agent deployed on agreed devices, key data sources arriving, incidents escalated correctly, tickets created in your own ticketing system, weekly noise trend falling.

  4. Step 4: Run the PoC on real tenants

Pick representative clients and a fixed time box. Expect the first weeks to be noisier while the new SOC learns each environment.

  5. Step 5: Export history from the old provider

Download incident history and reports you need for audit and insurance.

  6. Step 6: Onboard client by client with overlap

Deploy, connect tools, complete assessments and set response permissions while the old service still runs.

  7. Step 7: Cut over and remove the old agent

Once the new SOC is handling incidents, switch off the old service for that client and remove its agent cleanly.

  8. Step 8: Review after 30 days

Compare outcomes against your success criteria and the old service.

What should you ask a new MDR provider before switching?

Ask questions that test response, not just detection. Find out who contains threats and when, how remediation is tracked, how incidents reach your ticketing system, how noise is handled in the first weeks, what happens to your data if you leave and how outcomes are reported.

  • Which containment actions can you take without calling us?
  • How is root-cause remediation tracked to closure?
  • Which PSA and ticketing tools do you sync with?
  • What does offboarding and data export look like?

Where does CybaOps fit when you switch?

CybaOps is designed to be onboarded without ripping out existing tools. Existing EDR keeps running during the overlap, because CybaOps works with tools clients already have, including Microsoft Defender, Sophos and the other EDR tools you already use, so MSPs can compare old and new services side by side before cutover.

  • CybaOps works with the security tools you already have, including Microsoft Defender, Sophos and the other EDR tools you already use, so you do not have to rip and replace.
  • CybaOps connects to Microsoft Defender, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID logs.
  • The CybaOps agent can be deployed through your existing RMM.
  • CybaOps collects security logs from endpoints, firewalls, cloud and Microsoft 365 into one place.
  • Our UK-based security operations centre monitors customer environments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Incidents are worked as cases in CybaOps, so every alert, action and note sits in one record your team can see.
  • MSPs can run CybaOps across all their customers from one multi-tenant platform.
  • Vulnerability data can be exported from CybaOps reports.

Onboarding scope and timings are agreed with each partner before it starts.

What else do teams ask about switching MDR?

These are the most common practical questions from MSPs planning a move away from their current MDR or SOC provider.

Can we run two MDR agents at once?

Often yes for a short overlap, but confirm compatibility and avoid two products blocking the same activity.

How long should a PoC last?

Long enough to see real incidents and a falling noise trend. Agree a fixed time box upfront.

What happens to our data if we leave?

Ask every provider. Export incident history before the old contract ends.

Should we switch all clients at once?

No. Move in waves, starting with clients that represent your typical estate.

What should you do next?

See onboarding and connectors on the CybaOps Platform page. MSPs moving a client book can read about the partner model on the Partner page.
