How do you compare and switch MDR providers?
By Oliver Spence, CEO, CybaVerse. Last reviewed
Compare MDR providers on who acts after detection, which tools they cover, how they escalate and how they prove outcomes. Test the shortlist with a scoped proof of concept against written success criteria. Switch by running the new service in parallel with the old one until data, escalation contacts and pre-approved actions are confirmed working.
This guide is part of the CybaVerse Knowledge Hub.
What should you compare MDR providers on?
Most MDR providers claim similar detection. The differences show up in what happens next: who contains the threat, who fixes the root cause, how quickly someone is reached at night and what evidence you receive. Compare those points directly, and check every claim against the provider's documentation or a live demo.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which containment actions can the SOC take? | Speed of response out of hours |
| Who fixes the root cause? | Whether incidents stay closed |
| Which EDR and identity tools are covered? | Whether you must replace tools |
| How are critical incidents escalated? | Whether decisions stall at night |
| Is it built for MSP delivery? | Multi-tenant management and white-label |
| What evidence do you get? | Reporting to clients and insurers |
When is another provider the better fit?
Another provider can be the better fit when its model matches your situation more closely. Microsoft-only estates that want Microsoft analysts may prefer Microsoft Defender Experts for XDR. Large enterprises with in-house SOC teams may want co-managed SIEM services. Be honest about your needs before you compare products.
- Choose a vendor's own managed service if you use only that vendor's tools and do not need MSP delivery.
- Choose a co-managed model if you already staff analysts and need extra hours.
- Choose an MSP-delivered MDR platform if you are an MSP, or buy through one, and want one branded service across mixed tools.
How do you switch without a coverage gap?
Switching safely depends on overlap. Keep the old service live until the new one is proven, then cut over. The steps below suit most MSP and mid-market switches. They follow the NIST incident response principle of preparing before you need to respond, rather than during an incident.
-
Step 1: Inventory what you have
List data sources, agents, escalation contacts and current containment permissions.
-
Step 2: Run the new service in parallel
Connect sources and deploy agents while the old service still runs.
-
Step 3: Confirm data health
Check every source is sending data before you rely on it.
-
Step 4: Agree actions and contacts
Set pre-approved actions and a complete escalation list.
-
Step 5: Cut over and keep records
Remove the old agents only after the new service is confirmed, and export historical data first.

How does CybaOps compare?
CybaOps is the CybaVerse MDR platform, sold through MSPs, resellers and distributors, backed by our UK-based security operations centre. Buyers can see monitoring, investigation, vulnerability management and the Remediation Engine in a CybaOps demo before they commit to anything. Thinkmoney's CISO, Glenn Sproule, chose CybaVerse for its SOC.
- Our UK-based security operations centre monitors customer environments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- CybaVerse offers three MDR packages, CybaCore, CybaEdge and CybaOne, sold through MSPs and resellers.
- CybaOps works with the security tools you already have, including Microsoft Defender, Sophos and the other EDR tools you already use, so you do not have to rip and replace.
- CybaVM gives continuous internal and external vulnerability scanning, prioritised in one place in CybaOps.
- The CybaOps Remediation Engine is live today: it can fix security issues automatically, so gaps get closed rather than just reported.
- MSPs can run CybaOps across all their customers from one multi-tenant platform.
- CybaVerse is certified under the NCSC Cyber Incident Response (CIR) scheme at Standard Level. CybaVerse is ISO 27001 certified.

What else do buyers ask when comparing MDR?
These are the follow-up questions we hear most from MSPs and IT teams with an MDR decision to make.
How long should an MDR proof of concept run?
Long enough to see real incidents and test escalation, which for most estates means several weeks. Agree the scope, data sources and success criteria in writing before you start.
Can we switch MDR mid-contract?
Usually, if you plan an overlap period. Check notice terms, data export rights and agent removal steps with your current provider before you start, so you are never left without monitoring.
What evidence should a provider show during evaluation?
Ask for a walk-through of a real case from alert to closure, the containment actions available and an example client report. Documentation you can read yourself is better than slides.
